*Update* More details have been released from the Massachusetts State Police Association following the accident on Interstate 91 in Greenfield involving a Massachusetts State Trooper and a wrong-way vehicle. At about 5:30 p.m. on June 10th, the State Police Shelburne Falls barracks was alerted to the wrong-way operator on I-91 North, who was in Bernardston at the time. The driver travelled south for several miles and nearly struck many vehicles. State Police Trooper Trombley paralleled the vehicle and then sped to the next emergency turnaround area. At risk to personal injury, Trooper Trombley put his cruiser in the path of the dangerous vehicle in order to prevent a head-on collision with another vehicle on the highway.
Trooper Trombley and the operator of the wrong-way vehicle were transported to the hospital for injuries from the crash. The incident is still under investigation.
