(Erving, MA) A road resurfacing project is underway on Route 2 in Erving by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). The project spans from the French King Bridge to the west end of Old State Road and will take from now through the fall of this year.

The Erving Police Department warns residents to prepare for delays in the area of the French King Highway during the roadwork and asks drivers to use caution when navigating around the construction crews. According to the Erving Police Benevolent Association, “One of the biggest challenges for detail officers at a construction site of this magnitude is protecting the work crews from distracted drivers.”

Therefore, the Erving police will be “strictly” enforcing the hands free driving law, which states that drivers under eighteen years old cannot use any electronic devices while driving and drivers over eighteen cannot “hold or support any electronic device/phone.” The fines for violating this law are $100 for the first offense, $250 for the second plus a mandatory distracted drivers course, and $500 for the third and thereafter along with the mandatory distracted drivers course and an insurance surcharge.
