(Warwick, MA) Thursday evening around 9:30 p.m. the Warwick Fire Department was alerted of a fire at a resident’s home. The homeowners were awoken by the smoke detector and found a fire crawling up the side of their garage. A person was trapped in the garage due to heavy smoke.
A first alarm was struck by dispatch, calling in mutual aid to the scene. Warwick Fire Engine 1 and five firefighters immediately responded. Deputy Mankowsky was first on scene and discovered the homeowners had largely extinguished the fire themselves and helped the person out of the garage.
One person was evaluated on scene by Northfield EMS for smoke inhalation. All mutual aid was canceled prior to arrival. Minimum damage was incurred and there were no deaths, due to the smoke alarms functioning properly.
The Warwick Fire Department reports that this is the second fire this year where smoke detectors have saved lives and prevented significant property damage.
