(New Salem, MA) A section of Route 202, Daniel Shays Highway, in New Salem was closed Monday evening after a two vehicle accident. The Massachusetts State Police have said the accident was reported around 10 p.m. Monday and involved two sedans in the area of Packardville and Amherst Roads.
According to an update from Orange Fire Rescue and EMS, the accident left three parties injured and one heavily entrapped. Two sets of Jaws of Life were required to extricate the victim. Three occupants from the two vehicles involved were transported to Athol Hospital for treatment, while the entrapped victim had been transported by Lifeflight to the UMass Trauma Center.
Emergency responders from surrounding towns provided assistance to New Salem crews including two Orange ambulances, a Greenfield ALS ambulance, and Athol Fire with an ALS ambulance.
