(Boston, MA) The Baker-Polito Administration has awarded $5 million in firefighter safety equipment grants for the third year in a row as part of a $25 million five year bond. Grants were awarded to 308 departments this year, including many in Franklin County.

Governor Baker said in his announcement, “We ask so much of our firefighters, and no matter how dangerous or difficult the situation, they always do whatever it takes to help. This program is an opportunity to make sure they are properly protected every time they answer a call for help.”

Frequently requested equipment under this grant includes items like hoods, gloves, hoses and their attachments, and ballistic vests. Departments could also request washer and dryers for equipment, extrication equipment, fitness equipment, and more. Oftentimes, this grant is utilized to bring departments up to code with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or National Fire Protection Association safety standards.

Turners Falls Fire Department said they will use their funds to purchase new industry compliant personal protective equipment. Warwick’s Fire Chief said they will use their award for a new thermal imager, replacing one that is twenty years old.

“In today’s fire service, firefighters respond to increasingly dangerous calls. Access to the proper protective gear is critical to ensure their safety and ability to meet the modern challenges of emergency response,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Security Terrence Reidy. “Firefighters have a vital role in keeping our communities safe. We are pleased to show our appreciation for their courage and service by providing funding to equip them with the appropriate level of protection.”

Franklin County towns that have been awarded grants this round: Ashfield, Bernardston, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Deerfield, Erving, Gill, Greenfield, Leverett, Orange, Rowe, Shelburne, Shelburne Falls, South Deerfield, Sunderland, Turners Falls, Warwick, and Whately.
