(Greenfield, MA) The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has identified a list of sites for air quality testing near the former Lunt Silversmith building on Federal Street in Greenfield. The testing is part of the environmental cleanup response by the licensed site professional and one of the main concerns is TCE, a synthetic solvent that may cause cancer, liver toxicity, and neurological effects. Other testing will be completed as well to inform the cleanup process including groundwater and soil testing.

(12/29/22) The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) awarded a grant in the maximum amount allowed, $20,000, to hire an independent Licensed Site Professional (LSP) for the former Lunt Silversmith property cleanup project.
According to the DEP grant announcement, “Lunt Neighborhood Action Group will use its award to engage technical expertise to evaluate and interpret existing information about the Former Lunt Silversmith Site in Greenfield to encourage better public participation in the ongoing cleanup. The disposal site is a former metal manufacturing facility and contaminants of concern include chlorinated volatile organic compounds that have been detected in soil, groundwater, and indoor air.”
Susan Worgaftik of the Lunt Neighborhood Action Group said this LSP will be “responsive to the community” after the first LSP had lost the confidence of the residents of Greenfield. The DEP conducted an audit of the Lunt Silversmith Property environmental clean up and found that work was incomplete in the assessment and clearing of contamination.
