(Erving, MA) The French King Bridge on Route 2 between Erving and Gill is down to one-lane this week as work continues on the protective screening installation.
Construction on the project began last spring and is approximately 50% complete according to MassDOT. The construction bid is an estimated $5.53 million and the total project costs are funded by MassDOT and the Federal Highway Administration.
The bridge was opened in 1932 and has gained a reputation for suicide attempts. The 9 foot barriers being installed on both sides are designed to limit the disruption to the view of the river, according to MassDOT Project Manager Alwin Ramirez.
