(Gill, MA) MassDOT reopened Route 2 eastbound, west of the Avenue A Bridge, on Saturday, restoring travel to the Greenfield/Gill townline section of the roadway. MassDOT will be continuing work to stabilize, repair, and rebuild the embankment eroded during tis summer’s severe weather. This work may impact traffic patterns, but two-way traffic is anticipated to be maintained throughout the continued work.

Update: MassDOT has formulated a plan to address the eroded slope beneath Route 2 in Gill. The first phase includes an earth support system that will allow eastbound traffic to be restored, including truck traffic, and should be completed within the next four to five weeks. The next phase will full repair of the slope is still in the works. MassDOT will be monitoring the area closely, especially when weather conditions may impact the road.

The Route 2 detour around factory hollow between Greenfield and Gill has changed paths. The detour has been redirected from Adams Road to the French King Highway onto Silver Street then onto Road back onto Route 91 north to the Bernardston exit, then North on Route 10 then to Route 63 down to Erving. The detour will be in place long term after recent rainfall events have eroded the land beneath the section of Route 2.

Senator Jo Comerford shared that MassDOT will be closing a section of Route 2 eastbound beginning Tuesday from just west of the Gill-Montague bridge to Adams Road due to slope erosion from Friday’s storm. Both lanes will temporarily be closed this evening and then only the eastbound lane will remain closed indefinitely for public safety.
According to Comerford, “Eastbound traffic will be detoured around this area by utilizing I-91 northbound to Route 10 Northbound (Exit 50A) to Route 63 South, where it will rejoin Route 2 eastbound in Erving.”
