(Amherst, MA) UMass faculty and students are working to alleviate food insecurity and support healthy eating habits through Produce Prescription programs, linking the medical field to local farms and the food supply chain. Through the program, primary care providers can give eligible low-income participants “prescriptions” for free fresh, local produce to be picked up monthly at local health centers. UMass received three $500,000 grants for three years from the USDA to fund the prescription programs.
