NORTHFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Two area boys high school basketball teams have advanced to the MIAA State Quarterfinal round, while the Franklin Tech girls team will attempt to achieve the same goal tonight.
The Pioneer Panthers took care of business at home Tuesday night, defeating the Athol Bears at Messer Gymnasium, 42-32 in the Division 5 Round of 16. The Panthers were led by Josh Wood with 13 points, while Ben Kearney led Athol with a game-high 20 points. Pioneer will host either Drury or Rockport in the quarterfinal round Friday night in Northfield. Drury hosts Rockport tonight at 6:00 in North Adams.
The Mahar Senators broke open a tight contest to prevail over Old Colony last night in Orange, 56-42. Mahar will host English High of Boston Friday night at 6:00.
The Franklin Tech Eagles are a win away from the girls Division 5 Elite Eight. The Eagles travel to Westport for a 5:30 game this evening.
