WORCESTER, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A dream season came to an unfortunate end for the Pioneer boys basketball team on Wednesday. The Panthers fell to New Mission High School of Jamaica Plain, 60-49, in the Division 5 semifinals at Worcester State University.
It was a tight contest throughout, with New Mission only taking control late in the fourth quarter. The Titans went on a 13-2 run to close out the game. The teams had been tied at 47 late in the fourth.
New Mission will play top-seed Hoosac, which eliminated Mahar on Tuesday night, for the Division 5 Championship Saturday at 2:00 pm in Lowell. The Panthers, the #3 seed, finished the season at 18-6, with a strong core of players returning for next season.
The local high school basketball season will conclude with the annual All-Star Games, which will take place Friday night at Sherry Webb Gymnasium at Smith Academy in Hatfield. The boys game starts at 6:00, with the girls game to follow at approximately 7:30. You can listen to both games on Bear Country 95.3. The games will also be streamed live at bear953.com.
