DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Deerfield Community Preservation Committee will be holding a public hearing on March 27th at 6:15 p.m. in the Main Meeting Room in the Town Hall and via Zoom for the Community Preservation Act (CPA) projects. One applicant for the project funds is from the Friends of Deerfield, who are looking to restore an Augustus Vincent Tack painting titled “The Deposition from the Cross” which was created in 1925 in Deerfield. They are seeking up to $29,000 to complete the project, which will be done in two phases.
According to the Friends of Deerfield, the first phase of restoration includes a CPA request for $3769.88 and $1256.63 from private donations. The second phase costs would be determined after laboratory analysis, estimated to be between $35,000 to $50,000, however the maximum request from the CPA would be $25,000 to supplement the planned nationwide fundraising efforts.
John Nove, Chair of the Deerfield Historical Commission, has made statements in support of the painting restoration project, likening the artifact which was made “in Deerfield for Deerfield” to preserving a historical building. Nove said the painting will be displayed publicly and permanently in the town.
