PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Subject: Increase in “Smash and Grab” Vehicle Thefts
Date: May 7, 2024
The Shelburne Police Department is issuing a warning to all residents and visitors regarding a recent surge in vehicle-related thefts, specifically “smash and grab” incidents, within our jurisdiction and surrounding areas.
An organized group of individuals has been targeting parked vehicles, particularly in areas frequented by tourists and visitors. These criminals are quickly smashing vehicle windows and grabbing valuables left inside before fleeing the scene. Visitors to Shelburne have unfortunately fallen victim to these crimes, and we are taking this matter very seriously.
Here’s how you can help protect yourself and your property:
Stay Vigilant: Be aware of your surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to the authorities immediately. If you see someone loitering near parked vehicles or observing them in a way that feels unusual, please contact law enforcement.
Secure Your Belongings: Do not leave valuables such as purses, wallets, electronics, or other tempting items in plain view inside your vehicle. If you must leave belongings in your car, secure them in the trunk or a locked glove compartment.
Park Smart: Whenever possible, park in well-lit, highly visible areas. Consider parking close to building entrances or near security cameras. Avoid secluded or poorly lit areas where thieves may feel emboldened to break in.
Report Incidents: If you become a victim of a smash and grab, report it to the police immediately. Even if the stolen items are of minimal value, your report could help the authorities identify patterns and apprehend the culprits.
Community Cooperation: We encourage the community to look out for one another. If you see a neighbor’s vehicle being broken into, safely contact the police. Your quick thinking could prevent a theft or lead to an arrest.
The Shelburne Police Department is actively investigating these incidents and working to apprehend those responsible. We are collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
