GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — As the Greenfield fire department settles into their new station, chief Robert Strahan discussed some challenges they are experiencing such as fire engines entering Main Street to get to a fire. Strahan did note that the conditions for entering Main Street are improved over the experience at the former station.

As a result, the department is working on a hybrid lane on Main Street with a signal that can be activated to indicate fire engines entering the roadway as well as an additional remote switch to control the lights further west on Main Street.

The project did undergo a traffic study that concluded a traffic light at the entrance to Main Street would not be necessary for the new station, leading the department to pursue the hybrid lane option.
