GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Accessory Dwelling Units, or ADUs, were highly debated at the joint public hearing of the Greenfield Planning Board with the Economic Development Committee Thursday evening.

Governor Healey signed the Affordable Homes Act in August which included allowing ADUs by right and the state is still in progress of making recommendations around restrictions for municipalities.

Many residents came to speak about the desire for stronger paths to home ownership, preserving space and single family homes, others spoke about meeting the current housing needs in Greenfield and the local history of ADUs.

The Planning Board took no action on the zoning amendments 1, 2, 4, and 5, but did make a positive recommendation on zoning amendment 3; “Amend Section 200-48 of the Zoning Ordinance to allow first-floor dwellings in mixed use lots.”

The Economic Development Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, November 11th to continue with their discussion on the zoning amendments apart from ADUs.
