WHATELY, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Tuesday afternoon smoke was reported in the area of Whately’s Christian Lane and the nearby train tracks. The fire was found in a swamp, which did not stop it from rapidly growing and spreading to an area of three acres within a matter of minutes, according to officials from the Whately Fire Department.
15 emergency vehicles were able to knock down the fire within two and a half hours from the initial reports. Mutual aid was provided by the State DCR, South County EMS, and the South Deerfield, Hatfield, Erving, and Sunderland fire departments.
