STOW, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Thanksgiving day is the number one day for house fires according to State Fire Marshal Jon Davine, with 705 Thanksgiving Day residential fires taking place between 2019 and 2023.

State Fire Marshal Davine shared some safety tips to prevent cooking fires this week:

  • Utilize the “hush” feature on smoke alarms rather than taking the batteries out,
  • clean up grease spills,
  • keep flammable materials away from the stovetop,
  • ensure the oven is empty before turning it on,
  • and in the event of a fire on the stovetop, cover it with a lid or cookie sheet, never try to douse it with water.
