(Greenfield, MA) – Congressman Jim McGovern has a strong recommendation for people concerned about President Trump’s threats to reduce funding for so-called “sanctuary cities.”
“Just ignore him,” McGovern said at a recent press briefing in Greenfield. “I’m not even sure he can legally do what he’s threatening to do.”
Trump has suggested that communities who have declared “sanctuary” status might find themselves cut off from certain types of federal funding, including some related to pandemic relief. The administration has taken issue with communities which are resistant to federal efforts to deport undocumented immigrants.
McGovern, who chairs the powerful House Rules Committee, said there are more important things to focus on than presidential rhetoric.
“We have much bigger issues to deal with right now, first and foremost, the health and safety of our communities,” McGovern added.
The Greenfield City Council this past year declared the city a “safe” community, passing an ordinance which prohibits city officials from assisting in federal deportation efforts.
