GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) —  Greenfield Public Schools now have guidelines in place when it comes to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, better known as ICE, entering schools.

ICE officers must check in with the Superintendent’s office prior to entering schools with a judicial warrant, parents or guardians will be notified if their student is the subject of enforcement actions, student records will not be shared with ICE without proper legal authorization and local authorities will be contacted if ICE does not follow proper procedure.

A recent executive order has removed the protection around sensitive locations such as schools, allowing ICE to conduct arrests and other enforcement actions in these locations. The Department of Homeland Security has left it up to ICE to determine if they should conduct their enforcement in schools, stating schools should not serve as safe havens for evading law enforcement.
