LEVERETT, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Town of Leverett is considering the offer of a donation of a 147-acre of managed forest.
Following an Ad Hoc Forest Exploratory Committee Report, the Committee recommends the town accept the donation as the property offers significant environmental, recreational, and educational benefits to the town that outweighs the potential costs and challenges of town ownership.
The Committee report states, “Under Massachusetts law, management would be overseen by a three-person Town Forest Committee appointed by the Select Board working with a licensed forester to implement a forest management plan. Potential costs include periodic road/trail maintenance and eventual bridge replacement. Revenue from sustainable timber harvests could offset some expenses.”
Public engagement sessions will be held prior to the issue coming to Town Meeting.
