ORANGE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Temperance Fountain in Orange has been turned back on during this heat wave, providing free, public access to drinking water.

The fountain at West and North Main Streets was dedicated in 1904 and though it was decades before alcohol bans, the fountain was erected to curb the consumption of alcohol by providing an alternative beverage.

There were many Temperance fountains across the country; the Orange fountain to be one of the few not destroyed by opposers.
