WESTWOOD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — According to AAA Northeast, the government shutdown will impact travel. Airport operations will continue, although staffing may be reduced including TSA staff. Delays may occur in passport processing, so start the process early if you need to acquire or renew one. And confirm National Park access if planning a trip to one.

According to the senior spokesperson at AAA Northeast, Mark Schieldrop, here’s the travel-related impacts of the federal government shutdown and recommendations:
  • All airport operations, air traffic control operations and TSA screenings continue during a shutdown, but staffing may be reduced, causing delays and longer lines at security screenings.
  • Passport processing: processing delays may occur. Check your passport status early — don’t wait until closing in on a foreign departure date. If you need to renew your passport, get the process started sooner than later to accommodate delays.
  • TSA staffing could be reduced, causing longer lines and delays. Get to the airport early.
  • Use TSA PreCheck or CLEAR expedited security screening.
  • Aggressively monitor flight status and stay updated via airline apps.
  • Consular operations domestically and abroad will remain operational.
  • Check the FAA, TSA and State Department websites for updates and travel advisories.
  • Gather emergency contact information ahead of time and keep contacts for your airline, hotel and travel agent handy before departure.
  • Confirm National Park access – many parks may be closed or offering limited services. Each park status should be checked on a case-by-case basis.
