First Assistant District Attorney Honored with Statewide Prosecutor of the Year Award

NORTHAMPTON — Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan is proud to announce that First Assistant
District Attorney Steven E. Gagne has been named the recipient of the 2026 William C. O’Malley Prosecutor of
the Year Award.

Presented annually by the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association (MDAA), this prestigious honor
recognizes prosecutors who demonstrate extraordinary skill, integrity, and dedication to the pursuit of justice.
Gagne began his legal career in 2002 with the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, serving in the appellate
division where he successfully defended convictions, including several first-degree murder cases. In 2011, he
joined the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office as First Assistant District Attorney, where he has continued
a distinguished career in trial advocacy, prosecuting some of the most serious, complex, and high-stakes cases
in the region.

Gagne is widely respected for his zealous advocacy and tenacious spirit, particularly in the face of formidable
challenges. Over the past 15 years, despite the demands of his leadership role, Gagne has personally handled
hundreds of cases and brought dozens to trial, including multiple murder prosecutions. He has also argued
nearly thirty appeals. His early experience in appellate work laid the foundation for a career that seamlessly
integrates both trial and appellate advocacy, giving him a rare depth of perspective and expertise across both
disciplines.

“Steve has distinguished himself as an exceptional trial attorney, a gifted appellate advocate, a champion for
victims, and a true mentor and example for other prosecutors statewide,” said District Attorney Sullivan.
At the MDAA’s 30th Annual Prosecutors Conference on March 26, Gagne accepted the William C. O’Malley
Award before a room of colleagues and peers, taking a moment to express heartfelt gratitude to District
Attorney Sullivan. Reflecting on their professional partnership, Gagne shared, “It has been the honor of a
lifetime to serve as your First Assistant, working alongside you to lead an office filled with people committed to
truth, justice, and simply doing the right thing.”
