NORTHFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A fatal crash in Northfield is under investigation after a pickup truck left the roadway and caught fire Thursday afternoon.

Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell says emergency crews were called to Gulf Road shortly after 12:30 p.m. for a reported single-vehicle crash near 585 Gulf Road. Responders from the Northfield Fire and Police departments, along with Northfield EMS, arrived to find a Ford F-350 pickup with New Hampshire registration that had struck a tree.

According to officials, the truck’s cab was fully involved in flames when first responders reached the scene, and the driver was still inside. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and later assisted the medical examiner’s office. The driver, who was the vehicle’s only occupant, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police officers were the first to arrive, with firefighters reaching the location within minutes. Gulf Road remained closed for several hours as investigators processed the scene and reopened around 5:30 Thursday evening.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Massachusetts State Police and the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
