(Combined Sources) Today’s Massachusetts Primary could see a record turnout. Yesterday, Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin told reporters that he’s expecting around 1.2 million to 1.3 million people to cast Democratic ballots today and 150,000 ballots to be cast for Republican candidates. Galvin said the majority of early ballots received as of yesterday morning were mail-in ballots. Most elections see fewer than a million ballots cast in total, Galvin explained.
Democratic voters in four of the state’s nine congressional districts will have a chance to pick a new nominee to represent their party during today’s Massachusetts primary. In three districts, challengers from within the party are hoping to bump incumbent Democratic House members out of the running. Candidates for the U.S. Senate and House scrambled to make their final pitches to voters yesterday, ahead of today’s primary. U.S. Rep. Joe Kennedy III is challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Edward Markey in the Democratic Senate primary. Winners in two of the four primaries will face Republican candidates in November. On the Republican side, Shiva Ayyadurai and Kevin O’Connor are running for the U.S. Senate nomination. In the first Congressional District, Richard Neal faces Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse.
Polls will close at 8PM.
