(BOSTON) — Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker renewed the call for Bay State residents to be mindful and extremely cautious as they celebrate the new year. Baker says residents need to celebrate safely and adhere to the latest state restrictions for gatherings and businesses.

As of Saturday, businesses — including retail and restaurants — were required to reduce capacity from 40% to 25%, and gathering limits were set at a maximum of 25 people outdoors or 10 people indoors.

“These restrictions will be in place for at least two weeks and we’ll continue to evaluate the data to determine if any future steps should be taken,” Baker said.

Baker reiterated his plea for everyone to avoid holiday and New Year’s celebrations with anyone outside of their immediate households.

“I know what tomorrow night is, it’s New Year’s Eve and I know that the start of the new year for all of us is a chance to breathe a deep sigh of relief, but I would just ask everybody to continue to stay vigilant. To keep your guard up and to recognize and understand that the virus is very much still with us and will be with us for the next few months,” Baker said.

Baker also spoke about the state’s progress in delivering vaccinations. Vaccinations began Monday at long-term care facilities across the state, including the two Soldiers’ Homes.
