Amherst Groups Push To Cut Police Budget By Half

(Amherst, MA) — A pair of local groups are calling for massive cuts to Amherst’s police department budget. The Amherst Racial Equity Task Force and Defund 413 Amherst are asking the Amherst Town Council to cut $2.7 million from the Amherst Police budget, which is roughly half what the department is set to receive next year. The groups also are asking the Town Council to establish a “Commission on Police Practices” intended to oversee department operations.
