(Athol, MA) — An Athol man has been arrested for allegedly attacking his girlfriend with an ax. Officers responded to 55 Grove Street after receiving the report of the alleged attack from a 30-year-old woman. Upon arrival, the officers discovered that the suspect, 54-year-old Jerry Lee Hamel, had barricaded himself inside and was armed with two handguns. A State Police Tactical Unit was called and successfully negotiated Hamel’s surrender.
