(BOSTON) — Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker took to the podium at the Statehouse Thursday afternoon and delivered a strong denouncement of Wednesday’s attack on the U.S. Capitol, and President Donald Trump’s role in it.
“The whole thing makes me sick,” said Baker. “It was dark moment for our country, made even more depressing by the President’s role leading up to it, and his wholly inadequate and appalling response to the violence.”
Baker said Trump’s recent history should have prepared the country for what occurred.
“It’s important to remember that (Trump’s comments) were the culmination of months of the President repeating, over and over again, that the American electoral system is a fraud. As recently as September, he would not commit to a peaceful transfer of power–one of the fundamental hallmarks our our democracy–if he lost the election.”
Baker said the time has come for Vice-President Mike Pence to take over and lead the peaceful transition to the incoming Biden Administration.
