Staff Report
(Bernardston, MA) Some Bernardston residents are looking to see if their neighborhoods could be a bit quieter when the trains pass through. Two residents approached Bernardston Selectmen last week to seek if a quiet zone could be created where locomotives would be asked to not use their horns. The area in question would be between Merrifield Road and Gill Road. There are three crossings between the roads. Bernardston will be contacting the Federal Railroad Administration to see if the town’s railroad crossings have the necessary safety equipment to limit locomotive horns. Currently trains are required to sound their horns 15-20 seconds before crossings.
