GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Franklin County Sheriff Christopher Donelan has announced that he is stepping down from his position after serving for two terms, citing a desire to spend more time with family.

Donelan became Sheriff in 2011, replacing Frederick Macdonald. Donelan was previously the State Representative for the 2nd Franklin District from 2003 to 2011, succeeding John Merrigan.

Donelan is a Democrat born in Athol on Christmas Day in 1964.

During his time as Sheriff, Donelan oversaw the 2016 creation of one of the first in the nation medically assisted treatment programs for those suffering from addiction. Donelan’s tenure was also notable for its support of senior citizens through the TRIAD program, working with local schools by training for lockdowns and active shooter situations, as well as the addition of a well-known K-9 program and regional dog shelter.

Donelan was up for re-election in 2028 and an interim Sheriff may be appointed by Governor Maura Healey to serve until the 2026 election, at which point a contest will be held for the remaining two years in Donelan’s six-year term.
