STAFF REPORT
(Deerfield, MA) Update from the Deerfield Fire District:
At 3 p.m. Monday, Deerfield Fire received reports of smoke from a fire that was visible in Montague but located in Deerfield. An off duty South Deerfield Fire officer helped locate the fire from smoke visible on River Road in Deerfield. Greenfield Fire was requested for aid and they used their drone to pinpoint the location of the fire, however a Deerfield firefighters found the fire burning just before the drone located it. A passing storm helped knock down the fire, but more work was needed by the fire department.
Due to the rugged terrain of the area, firefighters with equipment did not reach the fire until 5:15 p.m. The firefighters found the cause of the fire to be incense burning to keep bugs away while someone was constructing a mountain bike trail on private property. An incense was left burning and caused the fire.
The scene was cleared by 7:30 p.m. and no one was hurt. The Deerfield Fire District reminds the public that the current extreme drought conditions make for dangerous fire conditions. They ask the public to not burn anything in the woods. Without the storm that passed through, the fire could have been much worse.
