Should you be worried about catching the COVID-19 virus from your pet?  Dr. Lisa Underwood of Pioneer Valley Veterinary Hospital in Greenfield says, technically, no.  Humans and other species of animals carry different strains of the flu virus. And there are no documented cases of a dog, for example, passing her strain to a human. However, if someone who is infected handles your pet, it is possible for them to leave the virus on that pet’s fur, or perhaps leash or collar.  That could then be transferred to you. So be sure to include your pets in your social distancing routines.  Veterinarians are not included in the Massachusetts small business closure order from Governor Baker. So don’t put off your pet’s health care. Just call your vet beforehand to see what restrictions they may have in place at their offices.
