(Colrain, MA) – A North Carolina-based cotton producer will pay $1.5 million dollars for its part in connection with a 2019 acid spill in Colrain’s North River. The fine paid by Barnhardt Manufacturing Company will settle complaints brought against the company by the state attorney general and the federal Environmental protection agency. The sulfuric acid leak from Barhardt’s Colrain plant killed hundreds of river species, including an estimated 270,000 fish.
