COLRAIN, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Over recent years, there has been a rise in the popularity of community wood banks. S

tarted in 2015 by the state Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Bureau of Forestry Community Wood Bank Program helps rural communities recycle trees and create energy security. According to the DCR, around 13,000 rural households in Massachusetts experience energy insecurity.

The wood banks provide donated or surplus fire wood to homes in need during the heating season and so far the towns of Montague, Charlemont, and Buckland have started their own community wood banks.

Now, the town of Colrain is asking its residents if they should start a wood bank as well. A community survey is available through the town website or in the Town Office.
