(Franklin County, MA) As of spring 2022, fourteen of the nineteen transfer stations in Franklin County have composting programs. Charlemont, Conway, Shelburne, and Warwick have started or restarted their food waste collection programs this spring and they join Bernardston, Deerfield, Greenfield, Leverett, Montague, New Salem, Northfield, Orange, Wendell, and Whately.
According to the Franklin County Solid Waste Management District, trash in our region is sent to the Carolinas so separating food waste can reduce trash by 28% and save money for residents. Composting food waste through these programs is easier than backyard composting because all food waste is accepted including meat, dairy, and compostable paper products. Any county resident can bring organic waste to the Greenfield Transfer Station for a $5 host fee.
