BUCKLAND, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — A full detour of Conway Street at State Street in Buckland will be in place for much of the summer after MassDOT and town officials determined the sidewalk construction is safer and more effective with a full detour. Once work is complete in that area, MassDOT will install a one-way alternating signal.

From the town of Buckland:

MassDOT, in coordination with local public safety officials, have determined a temporary full detour of Conway Street at State Street is necessary for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

In response to the Town’s concerns, MassDOT began excavating the shoulder for the appropriate room for a sidewalk. However, they ran into a pinch point at the retaining wall supporting Depot Street. After discussions with public safety officials it was determined that in order to maintain the work zone that the contractor  a detour for traffic is in order.

Unfortunately, the detour will be in effect for the majority of the summer while the contractor completes work in that area. Once that work is complete, MassDOT will remove the detour and install a one-way alternating signal TMP with an appropriate pedestrian.

Local Officials agreed that the detour for the entire summer is the safer and more effective choice. While the traffic calming measures might help, the risk of accidents or incidents with pedestrians navigating between sidewalks is too high. Safety is our top priority, and a detour, although potentially inconvenient, ensures a controlled and secure environment for everyone.
