(Global) As the nation and the world boils in anger at the death of George Floyd, Attorney General Keith Ellison announced today that the charges against Derek Chauvin have been upgraded to second degree murder and the other three officers involved have been charged.

“I know it is a lot asking for people to give us time,” said Ellison. Ellison went on to make the announcement that an amended complaint charging Chauvin with second degree murder has been filed, and that arrest warrants were issued for the three other officers involved in the killing. Charges of aiding in abetting have been filed for those three officers.

A parallel Federal Color of Law investigation is also underway. Section 242 of Title 18 makes it a crime for anyone acting under the color of law to willfully deprive a person of a right or privilege proceed by the Constitution or laws of the United States.

Ellison that his investigation, while quick, will also be thorough. Ellison said that winning a conviction in this case will be difficult. Ellison is confident in his approach, but history has proven the challenges in convicting a police officer of murder.

“To everyone that is watching I saw George Floyd mattered,” said Ellison.
