Now that schools in Massachusetts are closed until at least May 4, more resources are available for families to keep students on track. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recommends that students work for about half the length of the normal school day. WGBH is now offering an online distance learning center, found here. The new learning center lists learning resources by grade level and includes topics like science, social studies, math and literacy. PBS Learning Media is also available for free public use here. In addition to the core topics, PBS Learning Media also offers instruction in languages, women in politics, and dance.

Special Education Programs will continue in a modified fashion during the Covid-19 crisis. The Massachusetts Department of Education has advised families to expect their special education coordinators to check in regarding IEPs, which will be modified and revised as needed after the crisis.

“During the coming weeks, schools will continue to develop and expand ways to provide special education services remotely,” said the Department in a recent letter to families. The Department emphasized that in person meetings are not required for schools to provide remote learning services to students with special needs, and IEP teams will follow up when school resumes to determine the next steps. The need to provide free and appropriate public education is balanced with the need to protect students, educators, and service providers.

As for English Learner Education, further guidance is forthcoming. While Federal civil rights laws require schools to provide meaningful educational opportunities for students with English language barriers, the letter does state that individual experiences will vary depending on various factors. Equity is a top priority in local planning efforts in this regard.

Each school district should list meal availability for students during the crisis on their website. However, in the absence of this information a list of meal sights by school district is available here.
