Mark Zuckerberg has suspended President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely, in light of the recent events at the Capitol.
” The shocking events of the last 24 hours clearly demonstrate that President Donald Trump intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden,” said Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg said the decision to allow Trump to use the Facebook platform in the past was due to what he saw as the need to allow broad political speech.
“We believe that the public has a right to the broadest possible access to political speech, even controversial speech. But the current context is now fundamentally different, involving use of our platform to incite violent insurrection against a democratically elected government,” said Zuckerberg.
Many politicians use Facebook to keep their constituents updated and informed about what is occurring in State and Federal government bodies. Senator Ed Markey has responded to the violence in DC on his Facebook page with a video of his remarks on the Senate floor.
“Radical Republicans are waging an insurrection against the United States Constitution and our democracy. The notion that there was any meaningful voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election is a dangerous, anti-democratic, treasonous, fiction,” said Markey.
Markey also called for the impeachment of Donald Trump, a sentiment echoed by many Americans fearing the president intends to disrupt the peaceful transition of power to President Elect Joe Biden and Vice President Elect Kamala Harris.
