GREENFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Officials have revealed the cause of a fire in Greenfield last week. The fire occurred on March 13 at 20 Elm Street. Residents of three apartments were displaced due to damage to the rear exterior of the structure.
According to a report by Greenfield Detective Josh Lemay, investigators found what they believed to be the point of origin for the fire, a “fully melted recycling bin” with cigarette filters in and around it.
Utilizing a neighbor’s security camera, investigators were able to see the fire start to finish, but could not see anyone in the video. The cause of the fire was determined to be improper disposal of smoking materials. The fire has not been deemed suspicious.
