MONTAGUE, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) —  The Franklin County Technical School, FCTS, Committee voted unanimously to send a letter of opposition in regards to proposed changes to the admissions system for vocational schools in Massachusetts.

The proposed changes would enact a weighted lottery system, that would give every applicant one ticket to enter into the admissions lottery. Students could gain up to two additional tickets for having less than 27 unexcused absences in the previous 270 days or for not having a major disciplinary violation.

Currently, FCTS’s admissions process of reviewing grades, attendance, school discipline, student interview and recommendations, which would be significantly changed if the proposed changes come to pass.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is expected to vote on the proposed changes on May 20th.
