ASHFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — During the current significant drought, improper ash disposal can escalate quickly into a fire, which happened at an Ashfield home over the weekend. A brush fire was started around 7 p.m. Friday after ashes ignited, and a passerby saw the flames before it could spread to out-buildings or the residence.

The Ashfield Fire Department is reminding everyone of safe ash disposal to place them in a metal container with a lid, at least 20 feet from home, cover with low pressure water and mix, then days later the ashes may be safely emptied on bare dirt.
