(Greenfield, MA) The heavy rains that came through Franklin County on Friday afternoon dropped three to six inches, with Conway seeing over eight inches of rainfall. Lower Road in Deerfield was washed out while a vehicle was traveling on it and ended up in the water; the occupant was safely extricated. Route 2 between Adams Road and Main Road in Gill sustained severe damage but was reopened for travel by Saturday evening. Many roads and driveways in Conway were damaged and some roads remain closed. Local and state departments continue work to make repairs and open roads.

Update, 9 a.m. Saturday, July 22nd. Friday’s rain storms caused severe damage to many roads. Crews have been working throughout to clear and reopen roadways.

Route 2 was reopened in the area of the French King Highway, however a portion of it is still closed in the area of Factory Hollow coming to and from Greenfield. According to an update from the Greenfield Police Department, MassDOT engineers have assessed the issue and will hopefully be able to reopen the road later this afternoon.

Routes 5 & 10 have been reopened in Deerfield, River Road in the area of the 700 block is closed as of 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

Update 9 p.m. Friday evening. According to the Gill Police Department, Route 2 in Gill is closed leading into Factory Hollow and near Barton Cove. The department is expecting the areas to be closed for an extended period of time and ask the public to avoid the area.

Update 7 p.m. Friday evening, flash flooding has caused many roads to close and some to have been washed out by the water.

The Greenfield Police Department have made updates on road closings including a report of a road wash out near the bridge by Factory Hollow at 7 p.m., manhole covers being forced off the holes, and several road closings – Nash’s Mill, Arch Street, Bascomb Road, Plain Road by Butynski’s, Sanderson Street by Greenfield Middle School, North Street near Maple Street, and others.

The Deerfield Police reported at 5:45 p.m. that in Deerfield: Greenfield Road from Old Main Street North to River Road is closed, Conway Road/Route 116 in closed at Matthews Road, Pine Nook Road Closed with multiple wash outs and unsafe utility poles, Stillwater Road in closed from Lee Road to Upper Road with a major wash out, and Lower Road is closed with a major wash out. The department said many of the roads will be closed for days, and Lower Road may be closed for weeks.

A severe storm has hit Franklin County Friday afternoon, dropping what appears to be inches of rain. In Greenfield Nash’s Mill and Sanderson Roads are closed, and Arch Street is showing flooding.

Deerfield Police have notified the public of major flash flooding occurring and as of 4 p.m. Friday Route 5 & 10 in closed from North Hillside Road to the Greenfield townline along with Route 116 at Pekarskis, Upper Road, Hoosac Road, and Stillwater Road in Deerfield. The Deerfield Police have also shared a photo of Lower Road that they say will be closed for days and appears to have been washed out.

Montague City Road in Montague is also closed.
