SOUTH DEERFIELD, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — The Frontier Red Hawks used a suffocating defense to propel themselves into the MIAA Division 4 Girls Basketball Round of 16. The 13th-seeded Red Hawks took control of the game in the second quarter and went on to eliminate #20 seed Manchester Essex Regional, 51-33 at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
Frontier will next play #4 Bourne, at a date and time to be announced.
The Mahar girls lost at Lee in the Division 5 Round of 32, 63-25, while the Greenfield boys picked up an upset win at Lunenburg, 83-76. The 26th-seeded Green Wave travels to Boston to play #23 O’Bryant, date and time to be announced.
The Greenfield hockey team saw its season come to end in heartbreaking fashion, losing in double-overtime to the Sandwich Blue Knights, 3-2. The Green Wave had fought back from a 2-0 deficit after one period to tie it at 2.
