(Greenfield, MA) Governor Maura Healey has declared a state of emergency due to the rapidly rising numbers of families arriving in Massachusetts that require shelter and services. The state of emergency notifies the federal government as well as the state that the shelter system’s expanding need may be unsustainable through current systems as there are more than 20,000 individuals in shelter and at least 80 of these individuals are sheltering at Days Inn in Greenfield. Governor Healey sites work authorizations as a ‘primary driver’ of the crisis, calling on the federal government to expedite the work authorization process and increase federal funding to assist in sheltering and services.
