BOSTON, MA (FRANKLIN COUNTY NOW) — Governor Maura Healey has sent a letter to Congress to reject the changes that would cut federal funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, otherwise known as SNAP.
Healey said the changes would put an “exborbitant” burden on states, costing Massachusetts between $178-710 million annually and would detract from local economies.
The changes to SNAP were slipped into the federal budget bill and would cut back on spending by cutting off support for families once children turn seven years of age and increase work requirements, both having an exemption for married parents and consequently placing the burden of reduced funding on single parents.
