(Greenfield, MA)  — There will be joy in Mudville after all this summer.

The Greenfield Board of Health has voted to allow “contact” sports like baseball and softball to be played in the city. The board met last week, but took no action on requests by local leagues to be allowed to schedule practices and games under very strict social distancing and safety protocols to prevent the spread of COVID 19.

The board’s failure to act was met with frustration by league officials, who were anxious to get their charges back on the field. But according to Danielle Letourneau, Chief of Staff to Greenfield Mayor Roxann Wedegartner, one of the reasons the board held off on voting was because the state had not yet released safety protocols for Phase Three of the commonwealth’s reopening, which specifically addresses youth sports.
