(Greenfield, MA) — It may soon become tougher for Greenfield residents to use the referendum process to check the actions of elected officials. One of the charter changes under consideration by the city council would increase the signature threshold for referendum questions to 10 percent of all registered voters rather than the current threshold of 10 percent of voters taking part in the last biennial election. Some speakers at a public hearing this week proposed lowering the new threshold to 7 percent. The full council is expected to act on changes proposed by the most recent charter review committee sometime within the next six months.
