(Greenfield, MA) — The Greenfield City Council will NOT be getting involved in the debate over reopening Court Square to vehicular traffic. The council Wednesday night voted against supporting a citizen petition demanding that the area be reopened after being shut off to cars for the last several months. The closure is part of a pilot program launched by the city to try and increase foot traffic downtown. A decision on whether to make the setup permanent is expected later this year.
A city council subcommittee recently held a meeting on the petitions and determined that the council doesn’t have jurisdiction on the use of Court Square, which is under the purview of the mayor.
